Turkey is unlikely join the European Union while Recep Tayyip Erdoğan remains in power, Germany’s EU Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society Günther Oettinger has told German newspaper Bild, euobserver.com reported.
According to the report, Turkish accession would “probably be an issue for the period after Erdoğan,” he said, adding that accession was “not realistic until well into the next decade.”
A similar statement had come from Germany on Sunday. Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel said he did not see Turkey joining the union during his own political career.
