PM: Turkey wants to mend ties with Egypt

Must read

Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim has said Turkey wants to repair relations with Egypt, a sign of the Turkish willingness to reconcile with countries with which Turkey has had problems.

After restoring ties with Israel and reconciling with Russia, Turkey is now speaking about another move that could end strained relations with Egypt.

Turkey has not recognized the presidency of current Egyptian leader Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, who led a military coup that toppled the democratically elected Mohamed Morsi in 2013. The coup resulted in a breakdown in relations between Cairo and Ankara as President Recep Tayyip Erdogan vowed not to recognize the administration under el-Sisi’s leadership.

But Ankara has recently shown signs of a desire to mend the ties, and an Egyptian diplomat attended the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) summit in Istanbul in April.
