Must read

Turkey’s annual inflation eased to 32.1 percent in June from 32.6 percent in May, although high housing, education and food costs continued to strain households, official data showed on Friday.

Consumer prices rose 0.99 percent month-on-month in June, slowing from 1.7 percent in May, according to the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat).

Education prices rose 46.1 percent from a year earlier, while housing costs, including energy bills, increased 45.1 percent. Food prices were up 35.4 percent, and healthcare costs rose 33.6 percent.

The official figures are disputed by independent economists from the Inflation Research Group (ENAG), who estimated annual inflation at 51.4 percent in June.

Annual inflation has remained above 30 percent since December 2021. It peaked at more than 75 percent in May 2024 before beginning to slow.

In mid-May Turkey’s central bank raised its inflation forecasts, projecting annual inflation of 26 percent at the end of 2026, 15 percent at the end of 2027 and 9 percent at the end of 2028.
