Three more people have been detained as part of an investigation into the firing of gunshots at the US Embassy in Ankara on Monday, Turkish media reports said on Friday.

The first two suspects were taken into custody on Monday afternoon, and the vehicle believed to have been used by the assailants in the attack was also seized by the police, according to local media.

One of the suspects reportedly confessed to the police that he took part in the attack.

The early morning attack coincided with a deepening row between Ankara and Washington over the trial of a US pastor in Turkey.

The assailants fired six bullets at an embassy security gate from a passing white vehicle at around 5:30 a.m. local time, with three bullets hitting an iron door and a window, the Ankara Governor’s Office said in a statement on Monday.

Following a Turkish court’s decision to put US pastor Andrew Brunson under house arrest, US President Donald Trump ordered sanctions on Turkey and threatened more.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan also escalated the tension with the US following the imposition of sanctions on two Turkish ministers and doubled tariffs on aluminum and steel, claiming it was an “economic attack” on his country.
