A total of 98 people have been killed and 423 injured in traffic accidents over the past nine days across Turkey during the Eid al-Adha holiday.
Eid al-Adha, an annual Muslim holiday that started last Friday and will continue until Monday, led residents to leave big cities, including İstanbul. The largest highways, including the TEM, saw heavy congestion due to the holidaymakers’ travels.
A large number of traffic accidents occurred over past nine days despite warnings and heightened safety measures. On Aug. 31 alone, a day before Eid al-Adha, 15 people died and 77 were injured in 29 road accidents across the country.
The 10-day-long Eid al-Adha holiday will end Monday in Turkey.
