Turkey’s former Washington military attaché arrested over links with putschists

Must read

A court on Sunday arrested a former Turkish military attaché to Washington on charges of alleged ties to coup plotters.

Gen. Yavuz Çelik quit the military following a failed coup attempt on July 15 but was briefly detained by an Ankara court. He was released under judiciary supervision.

Detained by police on Sunday, Çelik was arrested by the court and sent to jail.

The government has conducted massive purges since July 15 and has arrested more than 20,000 civil servants, including generals, police, and judges.

Critics say the government has used the botched coup effort as an excuse to crack down on dissent and opponents, dismissing more than 100,000 public employees.
