Four soldiers and a police officer were killed in the southeastern town of Nusaybin on Monday in bomb attacks by members of the terrorist Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
Early on Monday, special forces police officer Gokhan Osman Karaduman was killed when explosives thought to have been planted by the PKK exploded.
The General Staff announced later in the day that four soldiers were killed in a separate bombing, which targeted a group of soldiers who were conducting operations after the death of the police officer. The General Staff said in a statement posted on its website that five other soldiers were injured and a police officer were injured in the bombing.
A curfew was imposed in Nusaybin on March 14. Hundreds of militants, members of Turkish security services and civilians have been killed in Turkey since last summer, when a two and half years old fragile peace process fell apart.
The PKK is designated as a terrorist group by Ankara, Washington and Brussels. At least 40,000 people have been killed in clashes between Turkish forces and PKK militants since 1984.
