An Ankara court has jailed social media influencer Fatma Soydaş pending trial on an obscenity charge after prosecutors opened an investigation over posts they said insulted religious values and contained obscene material.
The Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office said the investigation concerns content posted from social media accounts using the name “fffatmaase_.” Soydaş was detained in İstanbul and questioned by video link before prosecutors requested her pretrial detention.
The court jailed her on a charge of publishing or facilitating the publication of obscene images. A separate accusation of publicly insulting religious values remains part of the investigation but was not the stated basis for the detention order.
Soydaş denied publishing obscene material and said images circulating online had been manipulated using artificial intelligence. Her lawyer, Tansel Koç, also said material attributed to her was AI-generated and did not reflect reality.
Prosecutors argued in their detention request that the file contained video material in addition to still images, according to Turkish media reports.
Before Soydaş was jailed, the Ankara 5th Criminal Judge of Peace blocked access to her Instagram and TikTok accounts at the request of the Ministry of Family and Social Services.
Article 226 of the Turkish Penal Code provides for six months to three years in prison and a fine for publishing obscene images or facilitating their publication.
