Turkey detains 153 suspected ISIL members

Must read

Turkey has detained 153 suspected members of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group in nationwide raids, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said on Friday.

The detentions took place from İzmir and Muğla in the west and southwest, to Hatay and Mardin in the southeast and Samsun on the northern Black Sea coast.

“In the course of operations in 28 provinces over the past two weeks, our gendarmerie has detained 153 suspected members of the terrorist organization,” Yerlikaya said on X, referring to ISIL.

The suspects “have provided funds to affiliated groups” and are accused of “propaganda that benefits a terrorist organization,” he said.

Yerlikaya said the police had acted on information from the Turkish intelligence services and cooperation from authorities abroad.

Turkey shares an 800-kilometer (500-mile) border with Syria, where ISIL claimed responsibility in late May for an attack on the new government forces in the south of the country.
