Flooding caused by excessive rainfall has claimed the life of one person in the southern Turkish province of Antalya, local media reported on Tuesday.
According to reports, a lifeless body was discovered inside a car during a water and mud drainage operation carried out in the Kepez district.
Kepez has received 280 kilograms of rainfall in the past 24 hours, data from the Directorate of Meteorology showed.
Antalya Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Muhittin Böcek said the rainfall in the city was in “unprecedented amounts for a prolonged period.” He reported that 900 people stranded in their vehicles had been rescued.
The Antalya Governor’s Office announced that schools were closed for one day in five central districts and extended a day of administrative leave to pregnant women and individuals with disabilities working in public institutions.
Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced that they have allocated an emergency fund of TL 20 million ($650,899) to the Antalya Governor’s Office.
The Directorate of Meteorology issued an orange warning for Antalya, Isparta and Burdur provinces on Tuesday, indicating dangerous weather conditions with an uncommonly occurring meteorological event, making the likelihood of damage and loss of life probable.
Floods also occurred in İstanbul and Kırklareli provinces after heavy rains in September, resulting in the loss of eight lives.
Excessive rainfall and flooding further claimed the lives of nine people in the southeastern provinces of Batman and Diyarbakır and in the Black Sea province of Zonguldak in November.
