Turkey’s unemployment rate fell to 8.8 percent in December

Turkey’s unemployment rate fell 0.1 percentage points month-on-month to 8.8 percent in December, data from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) showed on Monday.

The number of unemployed aged 15 and over was 3,098,000 in December. The rate of unemployment was 7.1 percent among men and 12 percent among women.

The number of employed persons, meanwhile, increased by 399,000 to reach 32.05 million.

The employment rate was 48.8 percent with a 0.6 percent increase: 66.1 percent among men and 31.9 percent among women.

The TurkStat data also showed the labor force participation rate in December rose to 53.5 percent from 53.0 percent a month earlier, while the seasonally adjusted measure of labor underutilization rose 2.1 percentage points to 24.7 percent.

The unemployment rate fell to 8.5 percent in October, its lowest level in a decade.
