Turkey deported 778 foreign fighters in 2019, Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu said on Sunday, according to the state-run Anadolu news agency.

Soylu did not mention whether all of them were linked to the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) terrorist group.

There are some 1,200 foreign ISIL members being held in Turkish prisons, and nearly 300 are held in northern Syrian territory controlled by Ankara’s proxies.

Turkey launched a third military operation in northern Syria in October that was halted after a series of talks with the US and Russia.
