Turkish schoolchildren on Friday participated in demonstrations in 15 provinces across the country in support of the Global Climate Strike taking place Sept. 20-27 launched by Swedish student activist Greta Thunberg, the Artı Gerçek news website reported.
The youngsters cut classes to hold their protests in the afternoon simultaneously with others from around the world in order to demand concrete action against climate change.
Pier Square in İstanbul’s Kadıköy district was the center of the protests in the country. Simultaneous events were held in 14 other major cities.
The kids held banners calling for a reduction in carbon emissions and a halt to the use of coal.
“If we did this protest to escape school, we would do it on Monday, not on Friday, which is the best day to go to school,” one of the kids said.
