Turkey detains 17 people with alleged Gülen ties on their way to Greece

Must read

Turkish police on Saturday detained 17 people who were on their way to Greece fleeing a post-coup crackdown targeting followers of the faith-based Gülen movement, the state-run Anadolu news agency reported.

The report said 14 of the detainees were dismissed from their jobs as public servants after the 2016 failed coup. There were also six children with the group.

Turkey accuses the Gülen movement of orchestrating the abortive putsch, although it strongly denies any involvement.

Some 140,000 civil servants have been purged by government decrees over alleged Gülen links, while more than half a million people have been the subjects of prosecution.

Thousands of Gülen followers have fled the country to seek asylum in Greece since the failed coup.
