Turkish FM slams US decision to cancel Iran oil waivers

Must read

Turkey’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu on Monday criticized a United States announcement to cancel oil-related sanctions waivers on Iran.

“The US decision to end sanctions waivers on Iran oil imports will not serve regional peace and stability, yet will harm Iranian people. Turkey rejects unilateral sanctions and impositions on how to conduct relations with neighbors,” Çavuşoğlu tweeted.

His tweet included mentions to @SecPompeo, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, as well as the official account of the Department of State.

US announced that it would no longer grant sanctions exemptions to eight countries, including Turkey, in a move aimed at pressuring Iran over its nuclear program.

Turkey was among eight countries that received six-month reprieves from the unilateral US sanctions on Iran, along with China, India, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Italy and Greece.

The White House announcement means Turkey will be subject to US sanctions if it continues to import oil from Iran.
