Mesrob II Mutafyan, the Armenian patriarch in İstanbul and the spiritual leader of Turkey’s Armenians, has died at the age of 63.
The demise of the patriarch was announced by Bedros Şirinoğlu, chairman of the Union of Armenian Foundations.
Mutafyan has been unable to perform his duties since he was struck with frontotemporal dementia in 2008.
He was undergoing treatment at the Surp Pırgiç Armenian Hospital.
