Purged teacher from shut-down Gülen movement school disappears

Must read

Ahmet Ertürk, a teacher who lost his job in a purge carried out by Turkish authorities, has been missing since Nov. 16, according to his wife, another in a growing number of disappearances in Turkey.

Ertürk’s wife announced his disappearance on Twitter, saying her husband went missing at the same time that police raided his parents’ house in Ankara.

Ertürk was formerly a teacher at a school run by the Gülen movement that was shut down by the government. The regime accuses Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen and his followers of involvement in a coup in July 2016 and has been pursuing a wide-ranging crackdown on the group since then.

Ertürk’s wife pleaded for help from opposition deputies and human rights organizations on Twitter after stating that there has been no response to her queries to the police department and the office of the prosecutor.

Since the failed coup attempt on July 15, 2016, Turkey’s intelligence forces have been abducting men, mostly educators, linked to the Gülen movement. Some are still missing, while others were found in detention centers after facing torture.
