The Tekirdağ 2nd High Criminal Court has accepted an indictment seeking 5 to 10 years in prison on charges of membership in a terrorist organization for Professor Mehmet Kanter, the father of New York Knicks player Enes Kanter, the Habertürk daily reported.

Mehmet Kanter was dismissed from his university job after a coup attempt in Turkey on July 15, 2016 and detained briefly by police over Gülen links last year.

According to the prosecutor’s indictment, the allegations of Mehmet Kanter’s membership in the Gülen movement are based on phone contact with 127 suspects, 57 of whom were using the ByLock smart phone application.

Turkish authorities believe ByLock was a communication tool among Gülen movement followers.

ESPN also reported that the elder Kanter is not currently living in Turkey, according to Enes Kanter’s manager, Hank Fetic.

The younger Kanter’s passport was cancelled by the Turkish government in May 2017.
