Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Ankara on Sept. 28, the Sputnik news agency reported on Thursday.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitriy Peskov said the meeting announced by Erdoğan in New York would take place in Ankara next week.

Erdoğan said in New York that he would meet with the Russian leader on Sept. 28 to discuss developments in Syria.

The Erdoğan-Putin meeting was announced amid tension between Turkey and its NATO allies over a Turkish-Russian agreement to buy a Russian S-400 air defense system and a war of words between Washington and Ankara over US military support for Kurdish militants who control some regions in northern Syria.
