HDP Co-chair Demirtaş ends hunger strike after promises from prison administration

Imprisoned co-chair of the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Selahattin Demirtaş

Pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Co-chairperson Selahattin Demirtaş and HDP Hakkari deputy Abdullah Zeydan, who began a hunger strike in Edirne Prison on Thursday in protest of prison conditions, ended it on the same day after being given some promises by the prison administration.

Demirtaş and Zeydan announced on Wednesday that they would take part in a hunger strike that was launched by inmates in Edirne Prison on Feb.25.

A statement released on Thursday on behalf of the inmates on the hunger strike in Edirne Prison said the hunger strike continuing since Feb.25 ended after the prison administration promised to resolve the problems in the facility.

Turkey has stepped up political pressure on Kurdish politicians in recent months. In addition to appointment of trustees to the management of scores of municipalities, Turkey has arrested dozens of Kurdish politicians, among them 13 HDP deputies including the party’s co-chairs.
