Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım said on Saturday that an aircraft belonging to the Syrian regime crashed in Turkey and that a search was being conducted for the pilots, the Diken news website reported.

Erdal Ata, the governor of Hatay, said gendarmerie and medical teams have reached the wreckage of the Syrian plane and that no one was in the cockpit.

Yıldırım said that “the cause of the crash is not yet clear, but poor air conditions were reported in the region.”

The pilots ejected by parachute before the plane crashed in the Samandağ district of Hatay province, Yıldırım said, adding that a search for the pilots was continuing.

“Shooting down Mig-21 fighter jet by shelling it with 23mm machine gun, it fell in the northern countryside of Idlib,” said Syrian opposition group Ahrar al-Sham in a Twitter message with a video allegedly showing a plane that had crashed.
