Magnitude 5.0 earthquake strikes eastern Turkey

A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck eastern Turkey early Saturday, shaking parts of five provinces but causing no reported casualties or damage, the country’s disaster agency announced.

The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) said the earthquake struck the Battalgazi district of Malatya province at 6:20 a.m. and was felt in Malatya, Elazığ, Adıyaman, Tunceli and Şanlıurfa. Teams were in the field to assess the situation.

Turkey lies on several active fault lines and has suffered repeated deadly earthquakes.
