Turkey says US strike on Iran nuclear sites raises risk of global conflict to highest level

Turkey warned Sunday that a United States strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities had sharply escalated the risk of a broader regional war, urging all parties to halt attacks and return to diplomacy.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Turkey has “consistently warned about the risk of the conflict, sparked by Israeli aggression, spreading throughout the region and destabilizing the security environment.”

“The US attack carried out today (22 June) on Iran’s nuclear facilities has elevated that risk to its highest level,” it added.

“Türkiye is deeply concerned about the potential consequences of the US attack on the nuclear facilities of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The current developments could escalate the regional conflict into a global one. We do not want to see this catastrophic scenario materialize,” the statement continued.

“We call on all relevant parties to act responsibly, to cease the attacks immediately, and to refrain from actions that could lead to further loss of life and destruction.”

Turkey reiterated its longstanding position that the dispute over Iran’s nuclear program should be resolved through dialogue: “The only way to resolve the dispute over Iran’s nuclear program is through negotiations. We call on the international community to support efforts aimed at finding a diplomatic solution between the parties.”

“Türkiye stands ready to fulfill its responsibilities and contribute constructively,” the statement concluded.

The warning comes on the 10th day of the Iran-Israel war, which has expanded with US involvement. The conflict began on June 13, when Israel launched airstrikes on Iranian territory, citing nuclear concerns. Iran responded with ballistic missile and drone attacks, and the violence has since intensified.
