Iranian foreign minister in İstanbul for OIC meeting on Israel conflict

Iran’s foreign minister arrived in İstanbul on Saturday for a meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to discuss the escalating conflict between Tehran and Israel, Iran’s Tasnim news agency reported.

Nearly 40 diplomats are expected to attend the weekend gathering of OIC foreign ministers as tensions rise between the two countries, which have exchanged missile strikes in recent days.

“The foreign minister arrived in Istanbul this morning to participate in the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation Foreign Ministers’ meeting,” Tasnim said, referring to Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

The meeting follows Araghchi’s talks in Geneva on Friday with his counterparts from Britain, France and Germany.

“At this meeting, at the suggestion of Iran, the issue of the Zionist regime’s attack on our country will be specifically addressed,” Araghchi said, according to Tasnim.

Israel launched strikes on Iran in the early hours of June 13, claiming Tehran was nearing nuclear weapons capability. Iran responded immediately with its own missile barrage, in what observers described as the most direct and intense confrontation between the longtime rivals.

Speaking Friday, Araghchi said Iran was prepared to “consider diplomacy” if Israel’s “aggression is stopped.”

The OIC, which has 57 member states, is holding the meeting in İstanbul at a time of rising regional instability. A final statement is expected to be issued following the talks, Turkish state news agency Anadolu reported.
