Turkey denies report it asked MI6 to help protect Syria’s al-Sharaa

Ankara on Friday denied a Reuters report that said Turkey’s National Intelligence Organization (MİT) had asked Britain’s MI6 to play a larger role in protecting Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa after alleged assassination plots.

Turkey’s Center for Combating Disinformation said on X that the claims “do not reflect the truth” and stated that while MİT works closely with foreign intelligence services and Syrian security units on counterterrorism, it made no such request to MI6 and did not ask the British agency to assume any role in protecting Sharaa.

The denial came after Reuters, citing five sources familiar with the matter, reported that Turkey had sought greater British involvement following recent security threats in Syria.

Turkish authorities said recent joint operations with Syrian officials against the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) showed the scope of existing counterterrorism cooperation but rejected any suggestion that Ankara had asked Britain to take responsibility for Sharaa’s personal security.
