Attack attempt outside Diyarbakır police headquarters leaves no casualties; 13 detained

An attempted attack involving an improvised explosive device (IED) outside police headquarters in the southeastern province of Diyarbakır prompted a security operation that led to the detention of 13 suspects, the DHA news agency reported, citing the governor’s office.

The Diyarbakır Governor’s Office said in a statement on Monday that an IED was thrown late Sunday onto the road near the public entrance of the police department’s main service building. No casualties or damage were reported.

In its statement the governor’s office said initial findings showed that two masked individuals carried out the attack and fled the scene through nearby side streets. Explosives ordnance disposal teams examined the area and determined that the device caused no damage.

“The identification and capture of the perpetrators are being pursued by our security units,” the statement said.

The Diyarbakır Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation into the incident and issued detention warrants for 16 suspects.

Thirteen of the suspects have been detained during operations carried out by counterterrorism units. Efforts to locate the remaining three suspects are ongoing.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attempted attack.
