A Turkish-flagged LPG ship carrying 16 crew members was struck by an unidentified projectile during offloading operations at the Port of Izmail in southeastern Ukraine on Monday, causing a fire on board, Turkey’s Directorate General of Maritime Affairs announced.

The vessel, identified as the ORINDA, was hit while offloading cargo at the Danube River port, the agency said in a statement on X. The cause of the incident was not immediately disclosed.

“All crew members have safely abandoned the vessel. There are no injuries,” the statement said. Firefighting teams at the port are responding to the blaze.

Footage on social media showed flames and smoke billowing into the sky from the vessel, which was carrying up to 4,000 tons of LPG, according to reports.

Although the directorate did not mention what caused the attack, the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority said in a statement on Telegram that Russia had targeted Izmail with drones, damaging infrastructure and several civilian vessels, according to Newsweek.

Ukraine’s State Emergency Service, port authorities and law enforcement agencies were at the scene “eliminating the consequences of the attack,” the statement said, according to a translation.

“The Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority continues to ensure stable operation of the ports despite the constant terror of the enemy,” it added

Turkish authorities said they are monitoring the situation. No further details were provided on the extent of the damage or whether the ship will be towed from the area.

Meanwhile, a Romanian border village was being evacuated due to the explosion caused by the strike on the LPG vessel.

Romania, a NATO and EU member sharing a 614-kilometer (381-mile) border with Ukraine, has often reported Russian drones intruding in its airspace or crashing on its territory during strikes on Ukraine.
