Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan named Deputy Foreign Minister Nuh Yılmaz as Ankara’s new ambassador to Syria, replacing the chargé d’affaires who had represented Turkey since ties were cut in 2011 during the Syrian civil war, according to diplomatic sources cited by Agence France-Presse (AFP).
Yılmaz, who has served as deputy foreign minister since May 2024, previously worked for the National Intelligence Organization (MİT) under Fidan’s leadership.
The appointment of a close associate of Fidan is seen as a sign of Ankara’s growing confidence in its relationship with Syria’s new rulers, who came to power in December 2024.
Since then, Turkey and Syria have expanded cooperation in trade, security and infrastructure projects as part of Ankara’s broader push to consolidate influence in the region following years of conflict.
