A baby weighing 6.15 kilograms (13.6 pounds) and measuring 59 centimeters (23 inches) was born by cesarean section in the western Turkish city of Bursa, setting a new record as the country’s heaviest and longest newborn in recent years, according to Turkish media, citing national health data from 2024–2025.
The baby, named Ali Atilla, was delivered in the 37th week of pregnancy at a private hospital in Bursa’s İnegöl district. His mother, Ece Bircan, 28, who manages a local medical center, was under the supervision of obstetrician Dr. İbrahim Yaşa. The father, Murat Tunç Bircan, 32, is an attorney.
Doctors said the couple had expected a large baby of around 5 kilograms but were surprised when Ali Atilla was born at 6.15 kilograms, about two kilograms above the national average. His length and weight placed him among the largest babies ever recorded in Turkey.
Dr. Yaşa said both the mother and the baby were in good health after the delivery. “This was a challenging case because the baby was gaining weight very rapidly,” he told reporters. “At 6.15 kilograms, this is the biggest baby recorded in Turkey during the 2024–2025 period. Last year, a 6-kilogram baby born in Spain made headlines across Europe. Our case may also be noted in the medical literature.”
The doctor added that the baby was delivered three weeks before the expected date because of the mother’s increasing discomfort. “We decided on a cesarean section for safety reasons,” he said.
Speaking after the birth, Ece Bircan said she had been told throughout her pregnancy that the baby was developing ahead of schedule. “We knew he was going to be big, but we didn’t expect 6 kilos,” she said. “We are just grateful that he’s healthy.”
Her husband Murat thanked the medical staff, saying the family was “overjoyed” by the safe delivery.
The 6.15-kilogram birth weight of Ali Atilla places him among the world’s largest newborns in recent years, comparable to a 6.1-kilogram baby delivered in Albania in 2024 and slightly below the 6.33-kilogram boy born in Florida in 2025, both reported as the heaviest births of their respective years.
Reports cite a 10.2-kilogram boy born in Aversa, Italy, in 1955 as the heaviest baby to survive, though Guinness says the documentation is incomplete. The heaviest birth on record remains Anna Haining Bates’s 9.98-kilogram son in 1879, who did not survive.
