The head of Turkey’s election authority on Sunday declared President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan the winner of a historic runoff vote that will extend his 20-year rule until 2028, Agence France-Presse reported.

“Based on provisional results, it has been determined that Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has been elected president,” Supreme Election Board chairman Ahmet Yener was quoted as saying by the state-run Anadolu news agency.

Erdoğan received 52.1 percent of the nationwide vote while his main rival, opposition candidate Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, got 47.8 percent, according to the preliminary results of the runoff election.
