At least 2 killed in heavy flooding and landslide in Turkey

Two people were killed and one person has gone missing in floods and a landslide that hit the Turkish capital city of Ankara and northeastern Artvin province, Turkish media outlets reported, citing local authorities.

Heavy rainfall on Thursday led to flooding in Ankara, where downpours affected homes and workplaces, especially those in the Keçiören, Yenimahalle and Etimesgut districts.

The flooding killed 20-year-old Buse Doğanay, who was living in a basement flat in Keçiören, according to a statement by Ankara Governor Vasip Şahin.

Turkish media reports said search and rescue teams from Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) and firefighting and medical teams were dispatched to the area after they were informed that Doğanay was stranded in the apartment filled with water only to find her lifeless body, which was taken to the Ankara Council of Forensic Medicine (ATK).

Health Minister Fahrettin Koca expressed condolences for Doğanay in a tweet, also announcing that a search and rescue operation was started to find one person who went missing amid flooding in the capital.

Meanwhile, the Sözcü daily reported on Friday, citing a written statement by the Artvin Governor’s Office, that a landslide occurred at around 7:45 a.m. between the Hopa and Kemalpaşa districts.

An Azerbaijani national, a truck driver, died and an Uzbek national was injured when the landslide hit four trucks, the statement added.
