4 die, 19 injured in İstanbul due to heavy storms

Four people died and 19 were injured in İstanbul after the city was battered by heavy storms on Monday, the İstanbul Governor’s Office announced.

One of the deceased was a foreign national and three of the injured were in critical condition, according to the governor’s statement.

The İstanbul Municipality also released a statement on Monday detailing the extent of the damage caused by the storms. The municipality said 33 roofs were ripped off and that 192 trees, 52 stop lights and traffic signs were demolished, while 12 vehicles were damaged by winds that reached a speed of 80.78 mph (129.95 kph) in the Beylikdüzü district of İstanbul, 62.14 mph in Adalar in the Princes Islands and 49.71 mph around the Bosporus.

A clocktower was toppled by the heavy wind in Çatalca, luckily causing no casualties.

Turkey’s weather agency issued an orange-level storm warning for 17 provinces, the second-highest of the four danger levels, and a yellow alert, the third-highest danger level, for 35 provinces.
