Mahir Ünal, the deputy chairman of Turkey’s ruling party, said Tuesday that public surveys have shown consolidated majority support for both President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and his party’s alliance with a nationalist party.
The support for the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) is between 42 and 44 percent in every poll conducted by the party, Ünal claimed.
Support for Erdoğan and the People’s Alliance, comprising the AKP and the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), remained at 52 percent, according to Ünal.
Erdoğan was elected in 2018 with 52 percent of the vote after the country adopted an executive presidential system in a narrowly backed referendum a year earlier.
Two pollsters recently backed up Ünal’s remarks, publishing public opinion polls that indicated a landslide majority for Erdoğan and his alliance.
According to the SONAR polling company, the AKP has the support of nearly 40 percent of the electorate, while its ally, the MHP, would garner 11.3 percent of the vote in a possible parliamentary election.
In a presidential election, 41.5 percent of participants in the SONAR survey said they would vote for Erdoğan, while support for his possible rivals remained below 10 percent.
The presidential election can go to a second round of votes if no candidate can garner a majority in the first round.
An ORC polling company survey of more than 4,100 people across Turkey showed that the AKP’s support was at 36.6 percent, while its ally’s support came in at 14.1 percent.
