Turkey has more than 215,000 coronavirus cases, death toll hits 5,419

Turkey announced 947 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday, bringing the total number to 215,940, while 17 more people have died of the disease, according to a chart posted on Twitter by Health Minister Fahrettin Koca.

According to the chart, the death toll has reached 5,419 with the latest additions.

Over the past several weeks the number of new infections has been fluctuating, although it was on an upward trajectory after an easing of anti-coronavirus measures by the Turkish government as of June 1.

There are 1,206 patients in intensive care, of whom 401 are on ventilators.

The chart indicated that 1,013 patients have recovered in the last 24 hours.

Turkey conducted 42,320 tests for the coronavirus over the past day, bringing the overall number of tests carried out so far to 4,107,498.

The chart showed that 197,733 people have recovered in Turkey since the start of the outbreak.

Turkey reported its first COVID-19 case on March 11. The country eased preventative measures at the start of June, opening shopping malls, cafes, restaurants and mosques.
