A Turkish criminal court in Sakarya province on Tuesday arrested a man who on social media threatened Başak Demirtaş, the wife of imprisoned Kurdish politician Selahattin Demirtaş, the Diken news website reported.

The man, identified only by the initials V.M., was detained on Monday upon a warrant issued by Sakarya prosecutors after his social media posts threatening Başak Demirtaş with sexual violence caused widespread public controversy.

Başak Demirtaş has been the subject of harsh criticism in Turkey’s pro-government media due to her active advocacy for her husband, who has been behind bars since November 2016 on terrorism-related charges for his speeches and attendance at political events.
