Turkey recorded 3,116 new coronavirus cases on Thursday, bringing the total number to 101,790, as the death toll reached 2,491 with an increase of 115, according to a chart posted on Twitter by Health Minister Fahrettin Koca.

“We are better today than yesterday,” the minister tweeted, sounding optimistic about the trajectory of the disease inside the country.

Turkey has more cases than China and Iran, the previous hot spots for COVID-19, caused by the novel coronavirus.

Since the first coronavirus case recorded on March 11, some 18,000 people have been discharged from hospitals and the country has conducted 791,906 tests, the chart indicated.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said this week that the number of daily infections is stabilizing and that the country could transition back to normal life after a religious holiday at the end of May.
