Turkish special forces fire over Greek military vehicle at border: report

Officers from Turkey’s police special forces late on Wednesday fired over a Greek military vehicle that had been stationed on the Greek side of the border, the Ekathimerini news website reported.

It is not the first such report involving Turkish forces firing at Greek soldiers. In an incident earlier this week, a Greek border guard on night patrol came under fire from the Turkish side of the border.

Turkey’s special operations units also patrol the Evros River in dinghies, protecting the Turkish side of the river while also targeting the Greek side, according to the report.

The Greek police are on high alert for a possible mass push by undocumented migrants, assisted by Turkey, over the land border following the failure of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to reach a breakthrough in talks with European Union officials in Brussels on Monday.

Meanwhile, Ekathimerini also reported that a pair of Turkish F-16s conducted an overflight of northern Evros, the Greek-Turkish land border, at 2:50 p.m. on Wednesday.

Shortly afterwards, at 3:25 p.m., another two Turkish F-16s conducted an overflight of the Kalogeroi group of islets in the central Aegean at 26,000 feet.
