Court arrests news website editor for reporting on funeral of intel officer killed in Libya

Barış Pehlivan (2nd R)

A Turkish court on Friday arrested Barış Pehlivan, the editor-in-chief of the OdaTV news website, for violating the intelligence agency law by reporting on the funeral of a Turkish intelligence officer who was reportedly killed in Libya.

Two journalists from OdaTV, news coordinator Barış Terkoğlu and reporter Hülya Kılınç, were previously arrested on the same charges.

Pehlivan was summoned by a prosecutor to testify in the investigation after another court blocked access to OdaTV.

The news website posted video footage from the funeral of the intelligence officer on Tuesday and became a target of the pro-government media, which claimed that OdaTV revealed the identities of the intelligence officers attending the funeral.

The Twitter and e-mail accounts of two other journalists, Murat Ağırel and Batuhan Çolak, were hacked after they tweeted about the intel officer last week.

Following that incident, Ümit Özdağ, a Turkish deputy from the nationalist opposition party, revealed the name of the same officer in a speech in parliament, according to the Turkish media.
