Turkey’s judicial watchdog to investigate judges who acquitted Gezi Park defendants

Turkey’s judicial watchdog, the Board of Judges and Prosecutors (HSK), has launched an administrative investigation into the judges who on Tuesday acquitted all defendants in the Gezi Park trial, the state-run Anadolu news agency reported.

The board will assign an inspector to the case and later will make a decision, the report indicated.

The İstanbul 30th High Criminal Court on Tuesday cleared all the defendants, including businessman Osman Kavala, of charges of attempting to overthrow the government with the Gezi Park protests in 2013.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Wednesday painted the protests as a coup attempt.

Kavala was accused of orchestrating and financing the protests, which began over government plans to build over Gezi Park, one of the few green spaces left in İstanbul.

The protests snowballed into a nationwide movement that marked the first serious challenge to Erdoğan’s brand of Islamic conservatism and grandiose development projects.
