Turkish officials late on Tuesday claimed they detained a suspect allegedly linked to an attack that killed a Turkish diplomat in northern Iraq last July, the state-run Anadolu news agency reported.

The suspect was detained in a joint operation by the provincial police force and Turkey’s National Intelligence Organization (MİT) in the southeastern border province of Şırnak as he attempted to cross into Turkey.

On July 17 Osman Köse, who was serving at the Turkish Consulate General in Erbil, was killed in an attack at a restaurant. Two Iraqi nationals sitting at a nearby table also died in the attack.

In August Turkish forces killed two militants from the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) terror group who allegedly plotted the diplomat’s murder.

The PKK, listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union, has been waging a decades-long insurgency in Turkey’s Southeast.
