Greek FM: Turkey’s activities in eastern Mediterranean will lead to int’l isolation

Nikos Dendias

Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias criticized Turkey’s activities in the Aegean and the eastern Mediterranean on Monday, saying they are leading Ankara into international isolation, the Greek Kathimerini daily’s English website reported.

“We discussed Turkey’s illegal actions, which are not limited to Cyprus’ exclusive economic zone,” he told journalists at a joint press conference with visiting Cypriot counterpart Nikos Christodoulides.

“Turkey must understand that this behavior is counterproductive and is driving it into isolation,” he added, noting that they discussed developments in Libya and Iraq, the Cyprus issue and bilateral coordination on an international level.

He reiterated that a memorandum of understanding on maritime borders signed by Turkey and Libya was null and void and will further destabilize Libya and the wider region, adding that it is important for Greece that countries in the region recognize its illegality.

For this reason Dendias said he would be discussing the issue with the leadership of Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia in future trips.

Turkey had talks with the three countries in an attempt to find an ally in its campaign against the forces of Libya’s Gen. Khalifa Haftar.
