The public approval rating of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan dropped by 4.7 percent in December to 43.7 percent, according to the MetroPOLL polling company.

While 42.2 percent disapproved of Erdoğan’s job performance, 14 percent did not answer the question.

Surprisingly, approval of Erdoğan among supporters of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), Erdoğan’s ally in parliament, dropped from 79.2 percent in November to 52 percent in December.

Erdoğan’s approval rating was around 68 percent immediately after a failed coup in July 2016, according to MetroPOLL.

Observers say November’s high approval rating was due to Turkey’s Syria incursion, which was cheered by all the Turkish opposition parties with the exception of the Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP).
