Turkey was ranked 59th in the 2018 Human Development Index published by the United Nations on Monday, according to the Ahval news website.
Its ranking remained the same as in 2017 but improved to a category of countries with “very high human development,” a status awarded to 62 nations, according to the report. Turkey was among the countries with “high human development” in 2017.
Turkey’s human development score improved to 0.806 from 0.791 in 2017. The average for countries in the 36-member Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), of which Turkey is a member, was 0.895, while the global average was 0.731, the UN said.
Norway ranked first in the index followed by Switzerland, Ireland and Germany. The United States and the Britain shared 15th place, France was 26th, Greece 32nd, the United Arab Emirates 35th, Saudi Arabia 36th, Qatar 41st and Russia 49th. China was ranked 85th.
The index takes account of factors such as income inequality, education, gender equality, the environment and socioeconomic sustainability.
