A man with alleged links to the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) was stranded on Monday in the middle of a Turkish-Greek border crossing after he was deported by Turkey and denied entrance by Greek officials, the Diken news website reported.

The man was reportedly captured during Turkey’s cross-border incursion into northeastern Syria in October. He was deported at Turkey’s Pazarkule border crossing.

The Greek officials at the border crossing did not allow him to enter Greece, and the man was sent back towards Turkey, which did not readmit him, either. The man was forced to wait in the buffer zone between the two border gates.

A pro-government Turkish news agency claimed the man was a US citizen.

Turkey on Monday started deporting ISIL fighters to their home countries and announced that it had deported a US citizen who fought for ISIL.
