CHP to propose bill prohibiting mayors from hiring first degree relatives for municipal jobs

CHP deputy Özgür Özel

The main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) has been drafting a bill that aims to prohibit mayors from hiring their first degree relatives to work in municipalities, according to the party’s deputy chairman, Özgür Özel, the Artı Gerçek news website reported on Monday.

An İzmir district mayor from the CHP recently sparked heavy criticism from public after appointing his son as the head of a municipal-sponsored company.

Ramazan İsmail Uygur, the Torbalı district mayor, backtracked after the public backlash.

Another CHP mayor was caught trying to draw a second salary, a move that was reversed after the intervention of the party’s leadership.

“The CHP will not defend any wrongdoing,” Özel said at a press conference in Turkish parliament, adding that there are dozens of examples of nepotism among the ranks of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP).

“We are looking forward to seeing AKP and its ally’s reaction to our draft bill,” he said.
