A recent report claimed that American nuclear bombs are currently stored in six countries including Turkey, at its İncirlik Airbase, Deutsche Welle Turkish service reported on Wednesday, citing Agence France-Presse (AFP).
According to the report prepared for NATO’s Parliamentary Assembly (NATO PA) by Canadian Senator Joseph Day, some 150 nuclear warheads, mostly B-61 bombs, are kept at Turkey’s İncirlik base as well as at other bases in Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands and Italy.
AFP said the report was written in April but that the section about the nuclear weapons was removed from it this week.
Some estimate that the information was provided by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, a scientific journal that has published a recent study on the locations of US nuclear warheads.
NATO officials, however, have distanced themselves from the report and underlined that it is not an official NATO document.
NATO does not release detailed information on its nuclear capabilities even though it is clearly defined as a key component in its deterrence strategy.
