Turkey’s main opposition party on Thursday denied reports claiming that they would request snap elections after their significant victory in a repeat election in İstanbul against the ruling party candidate.
Republican People’s Party (CHP) Deputy Chairman Seyit Torun said they would focus on generating success in local governance and would like to help Turkey’s real problems in foreign policy and economy.
The CHP with its ally the İYİ (Good) Party has managed to win local elections in five of Turkey’s six largest cities.
Torun said Turkey has been in an economic crisis and that the Erdoğan government’s foreign policies have failed.
After the repeat İstanbul election, Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahçeli also said talk of snap elections would harm the country.
In an election re-run in İstanbul on June 23, the CHP’s Ekrem İmamoğlu gained a major victory against Binali Yıldırım, a former prime minister of Turkey.
