Turkish Parliament passes into law paid exemption from military service

Must read

New regulations that shorten the duration of compulsory military service and make permanent an option to pay for an exemption from serving was passed by the Turkish Parliament in a bipartisan vote on Tuesday, the Artı Gerçek news website reported.

Some 100,000 Turkish men are expected to be discharged from the military after implementation of the regulations, which foresee only a six-month compulsory service.

Officer conscripts will still be required to serve for 12 months.

Men who are willing to serve longer in the military will be able to request a six-month extension from their commanders.

Under the paid exemption from military service, the Turkish army will have the authority to decide eligibility by lots if demand exceeds capacity.

The president will also have the power to exempt individuals from military duty if necessary.
