German peace groups call on EU to end cooperation with Turkey

Germany’s leading peace institutes have called on the European Union to put an end to its cooperation with authoritarian regimes such as Turkey, which they accused of pursuing policies in complete disregard of human dignity, Deutsche Welle Turkish service reported on Tuesday.

At a press conference held in Berlin, a number of German peace groups introduced their “Peace Report” for 2019 in which they criticized EU policies vis-à-vis migration, including its cooperation with authoritarian governments such as Turkey, which plays the role of both transit and source country in the migratory crisis.

Experts who contributed to the report warned European governments of the risks of working with such regimes, claiming that it could obstruct democratic transition in those countries, ultimately leading to new crises and new waves of migrants.

The report was the joint work of the Bonn International Center for Conversion (BICC), the Peace Research Institute Frankfurt (PRIF), the Institute for Peace Research and Security Policy at the University of Hamburg (IFSH) and the Institute for Development and Peace at Duisburg Essen University (INEF).
