A total of 55.4 percent of the young people in Turkey describe themselves as happy, the lowest figure in the past 16 years, according to data from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat).

TurkStat’s “Youth with Statistics 2018” research has shown that the number of young people who describe themselves as “happy” or “very happy” has been declining since 2016. While 65.1 percent of young people were feeling happy in 2016, this figure fell to 61.3 percent in 2017 and 55.4 percent in 2018.

The young population, aged between 15 and 24 years, numbered 12.9 million in Turkey out of a total population of 82 million as of the end of 2018, according to TurkStat data. The young population comprises 15.8 percent of the total population in Turkey.

With regards to the source of their happiness, 50.5 percent of young people said it was good health while 20 percent said it was success in life.

According to population projections, the ratio of the young population in Turkey to the entire population will be 13.4 percent in 2040, 11.8 percent in 2060 and 11.1 percent in 2080.
